Moraga Way & Canyon Road / Camino Pablo Project
Project Description
Moraga Way
The Town of Moraga is improving several intersections and corridors within and adjacent to the Moraga Center Planned Development Area. The first project improves Moraga Way between Moraga Road and Ivy Drive, completing the bicycle and pedestrian network along the corridor. This is an extension of a project completed by the City of Orinda in 2014. In general, the project re-surfaces Moraga Way to provide an even surface for bicyclists while re-striping the roadway with buffered Class II bicycle lanes.
The project adds sidewalks and pedestrian pathways as well as replaces curb ramps and driveways providing an accessible path of travel linking Miramonte High School, residential land uses, County Connection transit stops, and the Moraga Center along Moraga Way.
Camino Pablo & Canyon Road
The second project improves the intersection of Camino Pablo and Canyon Road, which is a key route for students walking to Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School.
The project proposes to reduce the through travel lanes from two to one in each direction and assign the remaining area to bulb-outs while adding a pedestrian refuge reducing the crossing distance and narrowing the roadway to calm traffic. Additional improvements proposed at the intersection include rectangular rapid flash beacons, improved intersection lighting, as well as a speed feedback sign in the northbound direction to advise drivers of their speed as they enter the Town’s limits.
Green Street Elements
Finally, the project provides green street elements within the bulb-outs meeting the Municipal Regional Permit 2.0 requirements.
Contract Us
The Town’s primary construction contact for the project is Jaemin Park, Construction Manager/Resident Engineer. Email Jaemin Park or call 925-818-3756.

Updates
Moraga Way Pavement Repairs
Ghilotti Construction Company is currently working on finishing the Moraga Way and Canyon Road/Camino Pablo Improvement project. The contractor was delayed in finishing this project, as the crosswalk safety beacons and solar powered street lights are custom ordered items with very long manufacturing and delivery time. These items are now being installed.
Additionally, the contractor is tentatively scheduled to perform additional pavement overlay work along the north bound lanes of Moraga Way on March 13, 2020.
Moraga Way Construction
Ghilotti Construction Company (GCC) continues the asphalt paving of Moraga Road at Alta Mesa intersection the week of November 18th. Motorist should expect delay from 8 am to 5 pm. Please contact Jaemin Park with any questions about the schedule.
Canyon Road & Camino Pablo Intersection Construction
At the Canyon Road at the Camino Pablo intersection, GCC will continue installing new concrete sidewalks, curb ramps, underground storm drain pipe and electrical wiring for intersection safety improvements.
Construction Working Days & Hours
The Town is working the contractor to limit major construction work within 500 feet of the local schools that is very impactive to school drop and pick up times. Most work will be scheduled between 9 am and 3 pm, that are directly near the schools. There will be exceptions to this rule where work outside those times will be to address critical issues. Also, there will be some upcoming weekend work in order to lessen the impacts to weekday commuters and residents and to also accelerate the completion of the project.

Camino Pablo & Canyon Road
The second project proposes to improve the intersection of Camino Pablo and Canyon Road, which is a key route for students walking to Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School. At this location, there is a large pedestrian demand to cross Canyon Road but parents’ report vehicles traveling at high rates of speed as they approach the intersection.
The project proposes to reduce the through travel lanes from two to one in each direction and assign the remaining area to bulb-outs while adding a pedestrian refuge reducing the crossing distance and narrowing the roadway to calm traffic. Town Council Meeting Project Update
Caltrans has authorized the Town to start the project’s bidding process currently scheduled for construction this summer 2019. On March 13th, staff presented the Town Council with the public input received from the community meetings held and the proposed project improvements with a number of enhancements not included in the original project budget.
Town Council supported adding the enhancements which include, an additional sidewalk, speed radar sign and adding a 1-inch rubberized asphalt thickness, as part of the pavement overlay bid alternatives to the project. Town Council will be able to re-evaluate at bid opening on whether to include and how to fund the additional enhancements.
